Almost 14 years ago, I knew I wanted to get a puppy but I didn't know what kind. I was teaching here at LWGMS, and I planned to wait until school was out for the summer to look for one or think about what breed was best for me.

I ended up not waiting, though. One afternoon in early April, I was walking down Broadway, and out in front of Vivace there was a woman with a puppy on her lap. She was white with brown spots and she was the most adorable puppy I had ever seen. I stopped to pet her. The woman told me that the puppy was available for adoption and she was fostering her through a rescue organization.

I knew that this was the dog I was supposed to have! I immediately applied to adopt the dog (whose name was Sophia Loren, at the time.) I filled out paperwork and waited for my home visit appointment. The rescue organization was very careful and did a lot of checking to make sure potential dog owners are responsible people. Friends completed character reference forms about me. I got the fence repaired. And I waited....a long time. The foster parent had gotten a second job and had no time to come meet me for a home visit. I called the rescue organization every few days for two months. I went to see Sophia's littermate Scarlett O'Hara, who lived with a pet store owner in Kirkland. She was also available for adoption, and I liked her...but I loved Sophia already.

Months went by and on my 30th birthday, the person who runs the rescue organization called and said Sophia was mine.

I took her home and tried out a bunch of names to see if there were any that suited her better than Sophia. She jumped up and down at the sound of Daisy.

It was the last week of school at LWGMS, and Daisy came to school with me. And then she came all summer. And when school started the next fall, she came every day then too, for the next 13 years. She was always there for the girls when they felt sad or needed a cuddle.

Last school year, Daisy started to have a hard time getting up the stairs at school, so she stays home now. It's sad not to have her here all the time, but now that she's 14, she's pretty happy to curl up and wait for us all to get home. She has two little kids at home now, so she gets lots of attention and cuddles still. She is still the cutest puppy I have ever seen.
